There’s something about those Gale girls. Stuff happens when they’re around – scary, magical, dangerous stuff. Alysha Gale isn’t sure why her grandmother willed her a “junk” shop in Calgary, but given that there’s a Monkey’s Paw with one wish left in the display case, it’s no surprise that there are also dragon lords overhead, a leprechaun for her first customer, and an evil sorcerer intent on mayhem. No worries, Aly can cope, and if she can’t she’s not afraid to bring in the big guns – the Gale Aunties! Calgary is about to get some very special protection – with luck, it may even survive the experience!

This is an accessible, fun series of essays written by the President of the St. Louis Zoo. He writes about a wide variety of animals, as well as the behind the scenes world of zoos. Mr. Bonner is dedicated to the cause of conservation, and his love of the natural world is infectious. There are a lot of funny stories here, but given the topic, some sad ones as well. A very informative book that is recommended for anyone interested in wildlife or the business of zoos.
A beautiful Sotheby's junior assistant goes rogue in this story about New York's art collecting scene. The author knows a lot about collecting art, and it shows in this interesting book.
James Hutton was a Scottish doctor, farmer and geologist but unfortunately not a skilled writer. Because of this last quality, he never received recognition for proving in 1788 that the Earth was millions of year old rather than the biblical 6,000. Nevertheless, his remarkable observations led to a new understanding of the continual forces that are shaping land and seas. In 1830 Charles Lyell would give Hutton the credit he deserved in his influential book Principles of Geology.
The book starts out as the story of Sophie and her artist husband Edouard Lefevre being separated when Edouard goes off to fight in World War I. He leaves her with a beautiful portrait of herself. The focus of the book then shifts to what happened to the painting. We find it almost a century later in the home of Liv Halston. When the Lefevre family claims the painting was stolen by the Germans in WWI and want it returned to the Lefevre family as restitution, the story becomes a real page turner.
This book is a timely read for the Halloween season. Joe Hill tells what appears to be a simple ghost story. Aging rocker, Judas Coyne, who likes to collect rare and strange items, buys a supposedly haunted suit online. When the promise of a haunting becomes all too real, Judas tries to rid himself of the suit, and in the process, discovers that the ghost that is haunting him is related to someone from his past. It gets a bit bogged down in detail at some points, and is not up to par with Hill's more recent book, NOS4A2, but still a good book for the holiday.
