Enjoy some karaoke of 1960s songs. Remember the Twist? Join us for a dance lesson. Be part of a “Where the Wild Things Are” wild rumpus featuring various crafts. To end the day-long celebration, the Beatles tribute band, Toppermost, will perform at 7:30 p.m. that evening. No registration is required for any event.

J.R.R. Tolkien Birth Anniversary: January 3, 1892
Born January 3rd, 1892 John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was a renowned English writer, poet, university professor, and philologist. Best known for his works of fantasy including The Silmarillion, Tolkien became a world famous author quite by accident when a publishing agent stumbled upon the story he wrote for his children, The Hobbit, that garnered Tolkien critical as well as widespread acclaim and prompted the popular and epic, yet darker sequel The Lord of the Rings. Despite his popularity, Tolkien shied away from it for the rest of his life and passed away quietly on September 2nd, 1973.
Ellis Island Opens: January 1, 1892
With the Statue of Liberty lighting the way, new immigrants realized they have reached their destination and the beginning of their new lives when they landed on Ellis Island in New York City. Opened on January 1, 1892, Ellis Island welcomed more than 20 million immigrants through its doors. Over the years, Ellis Island has served as a Coast Guard station as well as processing station, before being closed and declared a national park in 1956. To this day, Ellis Island welcomes many visitors, but now it serves as a museum, as it has since its restoration and reopening in 1990. Patrons interested in researching their family history can visit the genealogy section of the library website to search a variety of databases and websites.
