The Youth Services Department has books and media in over 40 different languages – from Albanian (J491.991) to Zulu (J496.398). You can learn a language online, too. “Little Pim” , is an online learning system for ages 0-6, and “Muzzy Online”, is a story-based immersion learning for early elementary aged children. Learn a new language or discover the riches of your own heritage.
Meet the Youth Staff: Stephanie
My name is Stephanie Lyon, the Youth Services Media Intern. I am fairly new to the library, having only joined the staff in early November. I just finished my first year of grad school at Wayne State University to become a librarian. Last December I graduated from Oakland University with a history degree. I love working at BTPL and enjoy my tasks making bibliographies, helping patrons and creating fun and exciting displays. The love of my life is my horse, Bently. He is a 12-year-old Thoroughbred gelding and we will be celebrating our 7 year anniversary as partners in crime this March. Over the past few years we have competed lightly on the hunter/jumper circuit, which we hope to continue again this summer. I enjoy reading and have developed the habit of using my time driving to the barn to listen to audiobooks. I love northern Michigan, hanging out at horse shows, spending time with friends and family, and going to Detroit sporting events.
Stephanie Recommends ...
Black Beauty CHILD DVD BLA
One of my favorite movies as a child! It is based on Anne Sewell's classic novel and tells the story of a horse named Beauty. It combines my love for English history and horses, making it a must see for any avid horse junkie!
A Little Princess CHILD DVD LIT
This movie was a must see for every family vacation in my childhood. My parents would hook up a TV in the back of the SUV and it was faithfully watched every trip. My poor father has never seen a single scene, but could probably recite every word by heart to this day! Another history based film that brings war, downfall, magic and triumph.
Anastasia CHILD DVD ANA
This film is on my “re-watch films of my youth” list. It is not often well known compared to the Disney princess films but is truly wonderful. Based off historical events, a princess of Russia's Romanov family grows up in an orphanage after the assassination of her parents and separation from her grandmother. She has only vague memories of her childhood, but she discovers her rightful heritage. So exciting!
The Brave Little Toaster CHILD DVD BRA
This film is SO ADORABLE! It is a movie about electrical appliances looking for their young owner as they work together to find him. Truly a family fun film for any age.
The Land Before Time CHILD DVD LAN
One of my brother’s favorite movie series when he was a child. I have seen this movie more times than I can count! It is about 5 orphaned baby dinosaurs that work together to find their way to the Great Valley.
