Fall Prevention Open House with Dr. Vino Purusothaman
Please join us on Monday, September 23 from 2-4 p.m.
In honor of the National Fall Prevention Day, Dr. Vino Purusothaman, P.T. and D.P.T, of Wellness Home Health Care, Inc. and MI Physical Therapy will be addressing ways to decrease the risk of falling for you or for a loved one.
We will also be showing exercising and strengthening DVDs from our two Fall Prevention VITALITY Kits after the presentation. Feel free to wear your workout clothing and you can exercise along with the dvds. No registration is required.
Falls are a leading cause of serious injury and hospitalization for older adults. Fear of falling can lead to decreased mobility as well as early admissions to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Falling doesn't have to limit a person's independence.
Tips from the Center for Desease Control:
Older adults can take steps to make falls less likely. If you are 65 or older, take the following steps to reduce your risk of falling:
Get some exercise: Lack of exercise can lead to weak legs, which increases the chance of falling. Exercise programs like Tai Chi can increase strength and improve balance, making falls less likely for aging adults.
Be mindful of medications: Some medicines—or combinations of medicines— can have side effects like dizziness or drowsiness. This can make falls more likely. Having a doctor or pharmacist review all your medications can help reduce the chance of risky side effects and drug interactions.
Keep your vision sharp: Poor vision can make it harder to get around safely. To help make sure you're seeing clearly, have your eyes checked every year and wear glasses or contact lenses with the right prescription strength.
The Library has two Fall Prevention VITALITY Kits which feature several resources to help you reduce your risk of falling. These kits were made possible through a generous donation from Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan. We have 40 VITALITY kits focusing on the many issues that affect the health and wellness of senior citizens and their loved ones. Each kit may be checked out for three weeks. Try out various aids to daily living, board and memory games, and more.
