Meet the Librarian: Miss Jen
My name is Jen Taggart and I am the Assistant Department Head of Youth Services. I started out as a part-time youth services librarian at the Bloomfield Township Public Library in June, 2001, when my son was just over 3 months old. In the past 12 years here I have especially enjoyed doing story times, book discussions, special programs, and most of all developing the Special Needs Collection in the Youth Room. In 2009 I was incredibly honored (and taken by surprise!) to be awarded the Michigan Library Association Children’s Services Division Award of Merit. At home, I enjoy spending time with my husband, son and daughter. We also have a pet guinea pig named Mr. Biggles! When I’m not at the library, I love decorating, trying new foods, reading, running and traveling to new places.
Miss Jen Recommends...
Here are a few of my favorite things:
Wonder by R.J. Palacio (Y FICTION PAL) is the story about 10 year old Auggie Pullman. Told in Auggie’s voice, along with the voices of family members and friends, this story is an inspiration for everyone. Auggie was born with a severe and rare facial deformity and has been homeschooled up until now. He bravely enters the world of 5th grade in a middle school. It is a year of rejection, kindness, cruelty, courage, and triumphant wonder.
Because Amelia Smiled by David Ezra Stein (E STE) is a heartwarming picture book that shows how one little girl’s smile can change the whole world.
Powerless by Matthew Cody (J FICTION COD) Even if you are not a superhero fan, you will be captivated by the mystery behind the super kids of Noble’s Green, Pennsylvania. After moving to this small town, Daniel tries to uncover the secret to his new friends’ super powers and why they mysteriously lose them when they turn thirteen.
Night Flight: Amelia Earhart Crosses the Atlantic by Robert Burleigh (J BIOGRAPHY EARHART) This is a beautifully illustrated account of Amelia Earhart's dangerous 1932 flight across the Atlantic Ocean from Newfoundland to Ireland, in which she survived bad weather and a malfunctioning airplane.
You Are My Little Birdby Elizabeth Mitchell (CHILD CD 781.62 MIT) This children’s CD is a wonderful compilation of “feel good” folksy tunes (by my favorite children’s musician!) that the whole family will love.
