Needs Assessment/Space Planning Study

Needs assessment/space planning study

Based on findings of the Vision 2002 process (see below), the library is working to develop solutions that address these and other concerns and questions raised by the community. To that end, BTPL has engaged Library Building Consultant George T. Lawson to conduct a needs assessment and space planning study. The results of the assessment and study appear below as part 1 and 2. This firm has a long history of helping public libraries look at the wants and needs of the communities they serve, at trends in library services, and at the future growth and make-up of the communities in which the libraries are located.

Accepted and Approved by the Board of Trustees, July 17, 2001:

The Future Vision of the Library Began with the Community

In July 1998, the Bloomfield Township Public Library adopted Vision 2002, a strategic plan to direct the library's activities through 2002. Leaders from community organizations as well as library patrons who simply had a particular interest in BTPL's programs and services participated in this planning event led by Dr. Joseph Mika of Wayne State University.

Over 90% of the tasks identified have been tackled or completed. One of the remaining tasks of the Vision 2002 plan is for BTPL to re-examine its facilities, programs and services with the goal of enhancing the library's role as "your community resource for a world of information and knowledge." Questions that have been raised by library users and the community over the past few years include:

  • When can the library offer food and beverages, like in a cafe?
  • What can be done to make compact discs easier to select off the shelf?
  • How can we get more books into the collection?
  • Where could BTPL install some additional comfortable seating so that I can enjoy magazines and newspapers?
  • How can we rearrange the Youth Room to accommodate more books and more space for families to share books and educational games?
  • When will the library get faster computers, more computers, a place where I can take time to learn about the Internet at a slower pace, and a place where I can hook up my own laptop to use BTPL's databases in the library?
