VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE AT BTPL

VOLUNTEER FOR FUN, FOR FRIENDS, FOR A LOOK INSIDE THE LIBRARY

Annual Volunteer Reception, Wednesday, April 16, 2008 2-4p.m.
Whether you need a reason to get out of the house or an opportunity to learn more about the inner workings of the library, you've got a reason to volunteer at BTPL.Each year, we express our appreciation in a big way during National Library Week. Please join us at our annual Volunteer Reception.

SPECIAL VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

volunteerCelebrate BTPL's special people – our volunteers. From the Friends of the Library's Wednesday Morning Sorting Crew to the National Honor Society and Eagle Scouts, to those who “just want to give something back," BTPL appreciates volunteers and their gift of service to this community.

High school students living in Bloomfield Township are eligible to apply for a limited number of openings to work 40 hours for their Community Service requirement.Because openings depend on available projects, a lead time of at least two weeks is needed to set up a work schedule, and usually the student works once a week for two or three hours at a time. Most jobs are clerical, involving general office duties or shelving, although occasionally thee are computer or writing assignments.

Court-ordered community service can be completed at BTPL, providing the applicant lives or works in Bloomfield Township.Work hours are usually available only during the weekdays.Tasks include clerical assignments, putting books away, book maintenance, or other jobs for which the volunteer is qualified.

Volunteers who apply purely to help the library have many options, depending on how many hours they would like to volunteer, and their skills and background.Book processing, secretarial support, copying and shelving are some of the areas usually available.Daytime hours are preferred, but in some instances evening hours may be possible.

Also consider helping the Friends of the Library on Wednesday mornings to sort and price donated books.

April 2008 the first library shop opened, selling used books and media, school supplies and more.Volunteers are needed to staff the shop.

We do not presently have a volunteer program set up for youth under age 14, however, we can occasionally help Boy Scouts who need hours to complete a service badge.

Weekend volunteer hours are usually limited because staff are not available to supervise volunteers. The Library Shop, however, and Friends' sales are places to help during the weekends.

To apply for a volunteer position, fill out our online form or pick up a volunteer application from the reception desk any time the library is open.Students and court-ordered volunteers need to take an alphabetizing and Dewey Decimal classification test.Hand them in to the receptionist, and you will hear from the library as soon as possible. If you filled out the online volunteer form, you must still come to the library to take the test.

To see more detailed job descriptions, please ask at the Welcome desk for the volunteer job description notebook.

BTPL's Friends of the Library is an incredible volunteer group who, through their diligent efforts, are able to contribute about $50,000 per year to the library's programs, materials, and facility. But there are many other volunteers working independently for the library. Here are stories of just a few of these very special people.

Family Helps At Retirement Homes
Stacey, Amanda and Brandon Alexander
For over seven years Stacey, Brandon, and Amanda Alexander havevolunteered to deliverlibrarymaterials to retirement/nursing home facilities that BTPL provides monthly for residents.

Once a month after school, the Alexanders visit one of the facilities. When the family arrives, each one has a job to do.The books to be returned to the library are gathered and counted by Brandon, whose eagle eyes find books that are not where they belong. As Stacey unloads the books, Amanda makes sure they are shelved neatly and in the right areas. On the way in and out, the children smile and say hello to residents.Amanda says, "Bringing books just cheers up their lives because everybody likes books."Brandon feels it is important to give to others and says, "Giving them books is fun."

Master Gardeners Help Beautify Library, Inside And Out

Fair Radom is a Master Gardener who shares her talents with the community by caring for the Master Gardener Fair Radomindoor plants and arrangements. While the library has a contract with a local firm, there is a great deal to be done on a regular basis to maintain our indoor flora!

Community service to organizations such as BTPL is an important part of the Master Gardener certification process.

For more information about volunteering and how you can make a difference to this community through contributing your time and talents to the library, please call Marty McGee, Volunteer Coordinator, at 248-642-5800, ext. 160.

And thank you volunteers one and all!
