Telephone Notification

What is Telephone Notification?
The library is pleased to announce a new method of notifying borrowers of overdue items and  holds that are ready to be picked up. To notify you faster,  we'll be calling you at home so that you'll be able to pick up your holds the day after they arrive.

The library is about to begin using an automated telephone notification system to notify patrons when materials are overdue, or if requested materials are available for pickup. The major advantage of this system is that we can now notify you of items you've been waiting for earlier, as well as give you an earlier reminder when items are overdue and accruing fines.

What if no one is home when the notification call comes in?
If the telephone notification does not receive an answer at a telephone number, an overdue or pickup notice will be printed and mailed the next day. If the telephone notification call is picked up by an answering machine or voicemail, the recording will be left on the answering machine or voicemail.

Telephone notification may not be for everyone!  If your household has small children who may answer the telephone, if you have several voicemail boxes on one phone, or if you have an unreliable answering machine, the telephone notification system may leave a message that does not get recorded properly. In these cases, the message is considered "delivered", and you will get no other notification.

We care about your privacy!
For each patron's privacy, the automated telephone messages do not include the cardholder's name, the title of overdue items, or the title of items available for pickup.  Therefore, telephone notification may not be right for households with several residents who have library cards, because you won't know which person or material is involved.

Are there other alternatives to telephone notification?
If you wish to change the method of delivery for your notices to e-mail (for fastest notification!), or print notification, you can fill out our notification form or call us at 248-642-5800 to let us know how you would like to receive notices.
