Your library card is like a credit card -- Guard it carefully!
Recently, the Michigan State legislature changed the Library Privacy Act (Public Act 455 of 1982). For patrons, this means that you have certain rights and responsibilities under the law. One
significant change is that you must present your library card both to check out materials and to have a staff member review your records. If a parent or guardian wishes
to look at the library record of a minor child, he or she must present the minor's card. If the card is lost, the parent can fill out a release form, which needs to be completed for the library's records.
Your library card is your key to BTPL's services and materials. Please treat it as if it were a credit card-anyone who holds it has access to your records and borrowing privileges. Misuse of the library
card is the responsibility of the person named on the card or, if that person is a minor, the financially responsible parent or guardian. See the "registration" section of the frequently asked questions page for more information on library cards.
If your library card has been lost or stolen, please call the library at 642-5800. Copies of the amended Library Privacy Act and the "Rights and Responsibilities of a Bloomfield Township Public Library
Cardholder," approved by BTPL's Library Board to help you understand the changes in the law, are available at the library.
