The Bloomfield Township Public Library acquires fixed assets, such as furniture, equipment, computers, book and media collection, through funding by tax revenues, gifts, state aid,
contractual and other fees, and grants. These assets are acquired for the library's community pursuant to the use of library services, programs, and materials. Disposal of those assets included in the library's
fixed asset inventory is governed by this policy.
As items are acquired, it is the policy of the library to identify each item individually in order to maintain a record of their date of acquisition, price, purpose and/or department of use, and, upon disposal,
reason for disposal and date of disposal.
If an item is broken, irreparable, or obsolete, it will be so noted in the fixed asset inventory upon disposal and discarded. Records of book and media collection items disposed of will be maintained for a brief
period. Records of used equipment disposed of will be maintained for three years.
If an item is no longer in use and no future use consistent with the purposes of the library is envisioned, it will be designated for disposal in a sale. Books and media will be provided to the Friends of the Library
for inclusion in their used book and media sales, if condition warrants resale. Equipment and furniture items which are used primarily in libraries (e.g., special use book display equipment) will be offered to other
libraries in the state via notices in library communications. Furniture and equipment items which are of general use (e.g., computers, furniture) will be offered to the public at a used equipment sale held
approximately annually at the library. It is not the policy of this library to offer used equipment for sale to staff, Friends of the Library, or members of the Board of Trustees, except as they are included in the
public sale of equipment. Withdrawn book and media items may be offered to the Friends of the Library prior to their used book and media sales. Staff may be allowed to purchase book and media items in advance of the
book and media sales at pre-arranged staff-only sales.
Book and media items noted for disposal are reviewed by the appropriate selectors and/or department heads for replacement in the collection, if warranted as is consistent with the BTPL Materials Selection and
Collection Development policies. A list of equipment to be disposed of by offering to other libraries and/or to the public will be provided to the BTPL Board of Trustees for their information.
Any funds received from the sale of used books and media by the Friends of the Library (after sale expenses) will be available to the Friends, consistent with their organization's purpose of supporting the Bloomfield
Township Public Library. Any funds received from the sale of used equipment (after sale expenses) will be deposited to the Bloomfield Township Public Library's General Fund, Miscellaneous Revenue.
